From Sensory Deprivation to Circadian Sanctuary

We took on creating the project, starting from the ethos of  Biological Dissonance.

What began as a dishevelled, windowless basement in Paddington presented the ultimate design challenge: a space entirely severed from the natural light and scent of nature.

Environments devoid of sensory stimulation and natural light can lead to boredom, passivity, and the disruption of the body’s internal clock.

The brief was to make it an attractive destination; our goal was to engineer an entirely experiential habitat that actively defied its subterranean constraints.

The Strategy: Emotionally Intelligent Illumination. With no natural daylight to rely on, the challenge became an opportunity to use the science of light to create a restorative ecosystem.

The Strategy

Emotionally Intelligent Illumination With no natural daylight to rely on, the challenge became an opportunity to use the science of light to

create a restorative ecosystem.

We replaced static, flat lighting, which confuses the endocrine system, with a dynamic, living environment

Chronobiological Lighting

We utilized advanced, layered colour temperatures ( Dynamic & Diffuse Light) that shift over time, mimicking the natural progression of the sun to regulate the biological clocks of the occupants

Ecological Anticipation

By integrating night-sky projections, we tapped into Connection with Natural Systems, grounding visitors in the temporal cycles of the cosmos (stars and constellations) despite being underground

Visual Nutrition & Fractal Fluency

Through soft rainbow washes and sculpted shadow play, we introduced Non-Rhythmic Sensory Stimuli. These subtle, unpredictable light movements replicate the “soft fascination” of dappled sunlight filtering through a forest canopy, allowing the eye muscles to relax and the mind to recover from cognitive fatigue.

A High-Performance Refuge The absence of daylight was transformed into the ultimate Refuge, a sanctuary where light becomes art, mood, and medicine.

The mood in rooms and the sensitive issues people deal with when getting colonics were important, and this result was achieved using natural herb diffusers, bird and water sounds.

The result is a spa that feels otherworldly yet deeply intuitive to the human nervous system.

We proved that even the most forgotten, windowless spaces can be recalibrated into profound places of healing, beauty, and biological restoration.

Why I chose these specific effects

Layered Colour Temperatures Dynamic & Diffuse Light

Given that we are actively manipulating hormones by using high-intensity, cooler light produces serotonin (alertness), while the absence of blue light and the introduction of warm, amber tones trigger melatonin (relaxation and sleep preparation).

In a windowless spa, controlling this transition is crucial for guest restoration

Sculpted Shadow Play

(Mystery &  Complexity)

Movement of light and shadows across a surface attracts the brain’s attention without draining energy.

These shadows often form “Statistical Fractals” patterns as a biophilic designer, I look for opportunities that the human visual cortex is evolutionarily wired to process effortlessly, leading to rapid stress reduction.

Night-Sky Projections

Connection with Natural Systems

Research shows that awareness of natural processes, including the night sky, moon stages, and astronomical events, evokes a relationship to a greater whole and is frequently described as relaxing and profound.
