Dear Designer,

Are you decorating spaces, or are you calibrating habitats?

We spend 90% of our time indoors, yet most modern environments fight against our biology. Today’s clients crave more than aesthetics; they require spaces that breathe, restore, and actively lower cortisol levels. Wellness, nature, and neuroscience are no longer optional—they are the new baseline.

You are more than a designer. You are a steward of human performance.

In a shifting world, beauty alone isn’t enough. “Biophilic design” has too often been reduced to token greenery—a potted plant in a sterile corner. This misses the deeper power of Design Intelligence.

Without fluency in nature’s source code—Neuro-Aesthetics, Psychoacoustics, and Fractal Geometry—your work risks being passed over. True biophilia isn’t just about how a space looks; it’s about how it functions as a regenerative ecosystem.

The future belongs to designers who deliver measurable impact. The CALL Certification moves beyond trends to teach you the rigorous science of:

  • Cognitive Restoration: How specific patterns can boost creativity by 15%.
  • The Economics of Well-being: How optimizing acoustics and light can reclaim the 4 – 41% of cognitive performance lost to distraction.
  • Regenerative Systems: Merging Permaculture principles with interiors to create self-sustaining habitats.

Let’s shift the narrative. Join us to master the 14 Patterns of Biophilic Design. Let’s use design not just to impress, but to craft interiors that heal, connect, and endure.

Why We Built CALL: The Convergence of Biology and Systems

Every designer knows the shift; that moment a client looks past the mood board and asks for something more—something that feels different.

I’m Harleen. My work has taken me from the savannahs of Kenya to the high-rises of New York and London. I have seen that design is not merely visual; it is biological. From transforming a windowless subterranean spa in Paddington into a circadian sanctuary to engineering acoustics in a Miami residence to drop noise levels from 180dB to 76dB, I realized that spatial design actively recalibrates the human nervous system. Whether through fractal textiles based on stem cells or lighting that mimics the sun, I design to lower cortisol and awaken the mind.

CALL was created from that truth: Design isn’t decorative. It’s regenerative.

But interior health cannot exist in isolation from the exterior world.

Annamaria brings the systemic intelligence of Permaculture. She has revolutionized urban environments, designing food forests in Chicago neighborhoods that did more than grow food—they reduced community violence and fostered self-sufficiency. She understands that nature operates on algorithms of resilience and distinct rules of survival.

The Convergence Over decades and across continents, we uncovered a profound gap in the industry. Biophilic design addresses the occupant, and Permaculture addresses the system. CALL (Calibrated Aligned Living Lifestyle) is the bridge between them.

We built CALL to teach designers how to move beyond “token greenery.” We teach the rigorous science of nature’s influence: how “Refuge” zones restore cognitive focus, how “Complexity & Order” reduces stress, and how regenerative systems create abundance.

When design is thoughtfully attuned to human rhythms and ecological needs, it transcends aesthetics. It becomes Design Intelligence—a catalyst for cognitive clarity, emotional restoration, and spatial impact.

This is design as performance. As healing. As the quiet, enduring edge that sets you apart.

HARLEEN

Harleen McLean, biophilic designer

Harleen McLean stepped away from law school to answer a deeper calling, one rooted in the rhythms of nature, the intelligence of light, and the tactile stories held within materials.

Her journey spans continents. In Kenya, she trained in ethnic design traditions that weave cultural resonance and ancestral symbolism into space. In Italy, she studied light and design, learning to sculpt atmosphere with sophistication and heritage.

Today, Harleen’s work is grounded in biophilic principles and neuroscience-backed design. Her approach channels our innate affinity for nature to foster emotional clarity, cognitive renewal, and spatial vitality.

Natural materials and forms: selected for their tactile comfort and grounding properties – are proven to reduce stress and cortisol levels.

Curated light and soundscapes: calibrated using evidence from circadian studies – restore energy, improve focus, and elevate mood.

Storytelling through textiles: drawing on nature’s fractal geometries and global craft traditions activates memory, meaning, and sensory engagement.

Her projects span hospitals, schools, wellness centers, and home spaces that are not just beautiful, but biologically attuned to how we heal, grow, and connect. Each space invites pause and restoration, like stepping into nature’s quiet rhythm.

Thank you for everything you’ve contributed to Nanci and the Stone Home. Thanks for your unique perspective, amazing artistic talents, and thoughtful support and sanity you’ve brought to the process. All my best for the next steps in your journey to be a biophilic wizard to the world — Much love

Jeff, President & CEO, CAPCO2 Solution.

Harleen – Thank you for the magic and love you brought to our home and our lives. I will never forget the special time I have had with you these 3 months. You are a GEM! Our gift being together lives in the silence and it lives forever — I love you magic lady!

AnnaMaria Varona, urban permaculture designer & biophilic systems expert

Annamaria Varona learned the language of nature at her grandmother’s side in the Philippines, absorbing intuitive agriculture and indigenous traditions that shaped her understanding of the living world. Later, she brought this ecological wisdom to Chicago, where she pioneered food forests that do more than nourish – they build resilient communities, reduce urban violence, and foster self-sufficiency.

Her philosophy merges ancestral insight with cutting-edge ecological practice across continents:

Regenerative Ecosystems: Annamaria’s approach transcends gardening, designing abundant landscapes – both urban and rural – that heal land and people alike. Her food forests become sanctuaries where biodiversity flourishes and neighborhoods transform into thriving, connected communities.

Permaculture as Social Healing: Through the integration of permaculture principles, Annamaria cultivates spaces that restore physical and emotional well-being. Every project becomes a site for education, empowerment, and collective healing – where tending the soil becomes synonymous with nurturing hope.

Cultural Bridging through Ecological Design: Drawing from her multicultural heritage, Annamaria bridges ancient wisdom with the demands of contemporary life. Her work honors indigenous knowledge, treats every garden as a story-rich tapestry, and ensures that ecological abundance is woven into the fabric of daily living.

A community member once told Annamaria that her food forest literally saved their life – a testament to her core belief: that restoring our relationship to nature can be the most powerful act of healing, for individuals and communities alike.

The Community Christian Alternative (CCA) Academy has worked with Ms. Annamaria Varona Leon since 2016. We hired her services for the design and development of 4,500 square foot native bioswale .We have found her consultation and design knowledge to be unequal. She is always teaching and training as she works, both staff and students.

The problem: why most “Biophilic Design” fails to deliver

Biophilia is no longer a niche concept; it’s a mainstream demand. Yet most implementations fall dramatically short of their transformative potential.

Plants as props

Greenery is used like décor instead of living ecosystems that interact with air, light, and human biology. (“We got some foliage - not a strategy.”)

Superficial wellness claims

Spaces are branded “restorative” without backing it up with data on stress reduction, focus, or recovery outcomes. (“There’s no evidence this improved well-being.”)

Lost opportunities

Designers miss out on high-value projects because they can’t translate biophilic benefits into performance metrics that matter to clients.

Client disillusionment

Shallow executions lead to complaints of “greenwashing” instead of meaningful change. (“It looks organic, but it doesn’t feel alive.” “It was a concept, not a conversation about impact.”)

Meanwhile, the science is bold and evolving:

A 2025 meta-analysis reveals that biophilic environments aren’t just restorative - they can actively increase inspirational thinking and support mental agility in high-stakes workspaces

The real opportunity? Designing with nature’s intelligence – not just its aesthetics.

Let’s move past trend-driven green accents. Let’s create environments that breathe, heal, inspire, and perform.
